You’ve Got a Friend from Above

As the song from the movie Ghostbusters goes: “When there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call?” Rather than summoning the ghostbusters, how about calling on the “ghosts” themselves.

What could I possibly mean by that?

Okay, let’s say you’re driving somewhere you’ve never been before. Of course, you didn’t write down any directions because you assumed your trusty GPS would get you there. If only you had charged your phone before leaving the house! Now what? When that happened to me, I pulled onto the shoulder of the road, sat in meditation for a few minutes, and called on my Grandfather Desmond. While a drinker and a screw-up during life, now on “the other side,” he had proven himself a whiz at navigation. Sure enough, I pretty soon I figured out which way to go. Des also comes in handy when hiking on mountain trails.

I have other helpers who are not in physical bodies. There are medical experts, (some of whom I brought home with me after working for some time at John of God’s in Brazil), who show up when I need guidance during a complex healing session. There are spiritual guides who impart their wisdom when I am teaching. And there are powerful angelic entities that arrive when I am shepherding a student to another spiritual level. My life is rich with these friends from above that cannot necessarily be seen.

My student Nina dreamt of a huge lion patrolling the outer perimeter of her daughter’s house. In the dream, it felt like there was a perilous situation and the lion was there as guardian and protector. Sure enough, the next day Nina learned that an escaped prisoner had been in her daughter’s neighborhood that night and had broken into a nearby home. Nina said that the lion is her spirit guide and always shows up when there is danger.

When you need help, who do you call?

Puzzling over a project at work? It’s not exactly a 911 situation, but you do need some expert advice without indicating to the boss that you can’t figure it out on your own. You can send a silent signal out to the universe, requesting assistance. And then open yourself up to hearing/feeling the response. You have to be open and available to receive the aid that is offered by “friends in high places.”

You can learn to connect with these invaluable guides when you have a strong foundation in meditation. When you can calm your mind and sit in the spaciousness of internal silence, you begin to honor your ability to link to your own intuitive powers and to recognize the messages that come from the vast network of beings who are an energetic heartbeat away on higher planes of consciousness. Don’t disregard any thoughts that seem to pop up in your mind, or a sudden feeling that a certain direction could be the right solution to your problem. It’s hard for these guides to come to your aid when you ignore the messages you receive. Meditation is the best way for contacting your spirit guides.

Of course, your most trusted guide is your own Higher Self—the part of you that is always identified with the higher spiritual energies of the universe. The more you heal your old wounds, release your trauma, and saturate your being with meditative peace, the more in tune you will be with your intuition, and the more you will be able to receive the messages your Higher Self is sending you. This is the guide that is always with you, always available for you to call upon.

How many times a day do you stand at the crossroads? You are always making decisions: to stick to your eating plan or belly up to the buffet; to diss your ex or find something pleasant to say; to twist the truth or give a real answer. Do you recognize the moment when you make these choices or are you living your life blindly, without considering the consequences of all those little decisions you make all day long?

When you start to call upon your Higher Self, or invoke the aid of the guides from above, you learn to live more consciously. You start to walk upon the path of the spiritual masters. And you find it’s good to have friends in high places.

All summer long, I’m sharing the very best ways you can connect with and learn from your guides by learning to heal, thrive and grow into the very best version of you.

Open the Treasure Chest of Your Spiritual Gifts

You’re sitting outside, enjoying the cool morning breeze and the sun warming your skin as you sip your chai tea. You are content, basking in the lovely spring day before you have to head to work. Suddenly you feel anxious, unnerved, and a thought arises: something bad has happened. Moments later, your cell phone rings. Your mom says your dad is in an ambulance on the way to the hospital with a heart attack! As you throw a few things in a suitcase and head to the airport, you wonder: How did I know something was wrong with someone I love before the phone even rang?

Indeed, how did you know?

That feeling—the anxiety that flooded your body in seeming contradiction to the relaxed moment in the morning sun—came from somewhere beyond your five physical senses. There was nothing in your environment that created that anxiety; you had no previous knowledge that there was anything wrong with your dad’s health. But you have an energetic connection with your parents, even if you’re not thinking about them. In your mom’s worry about your dad, her panic as the ambulance doors closed to whisk him away, as she picked up the phone to call you, her energy reached out to you . . . and you felt it.

You’ve just had what is called a “paranormal” experience—beyond your five physical senses.

Of course, if you’d been in the office with a thousand things on your mind, you probably would have dismissed the feeling as just another indication that you really, really need a vacation. And that’s what happens all the time. You receive messages, but don’t listen to them or believe they are real. You doubt the reality of something that you can’t touch, taste, see, hear, or smell.

If only you realized how many other channels of communication with the universe are available to you! It’s like having a treasure chest that is buried beneath doubt and cynicism. And what a treasure chest it is!

The clairs are in that buried chest. The “clairs” are the senses beyond the five you know. Clairvoyance is seeing without the use of the eyes; clairaudience is hearing without the ears; clairalience is smelling without the nose; clairsentience is feeling without touch; and claircognizance, as you just experienced, is a knowing beyond the mind. “Clair” is French for clear. You were given a clear knowing that something was wrong before it was verified on the physical plane.

Whenever I sense the presence of the Egyptian Goddess Isis, I always “smell” the woodsy, spicy smell of sandalwood. When I first meet someone, I just “know” the contents of their soul. When I “see” a flame above someone’s head, it’s telling me they are ready for initiation—the higher level energy is poised above them waiting for me to help download it into their consciousness. And when I’m working with an individual, I often  “hear” medical information they need in order to heal.

And those gifts are just some of the jewels in that treasure chest. There are gifts that manifest physically, like the ability to be in two places at once, called bilocation. Great saints, like Padre Pio, have been witnessed doing that. In levitation, you body actually is lifted into the air. In psychometry, you can gather information about someone simply by touching an object of theirs, like a hairbrush or bracelet.

In other cultures and at other times, these gifts of the spirit (and others I haven’t mentioned) were considered normal. Energy healing was an accepted way to work with physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual difficulties. Telepathic communication was accepted as valid.  Our culture tends to suppress them. You have some of these abilities, they just need to be acknowledged and they will open further.

On a recent student call, one of the guys mentioned that the day after his Dad died, his mother whispered to him: “I don’t want anyone else to hear this because they’ll think I’m crazy, but I heard Dad call my name today, loud and clear.” She was worried that she was losing her mind. It was the only opening to the realms beyond the physical that she had ever experienced, or at least that she could not deny. But like many so many, she thought discount the experience because she couldn’t fit it into her understanding of reality. With the help of her son, who’s an advanced student of mine, she was able to integrate this experience into her worldview and look forward to more messages from beyond.

If you knew there was a buried treasure, wouldn’t you want to dig it up? To open the lid and delight in the gifts it contained?

You can unearth the spiritual gifts that lie buried within you. And you can learn to be as comfortable with the reality of these spiritual powers as you are sitting in the sun and sipping a cup of tea.

This summer could be an exciting time for you to begin the exploration of your own spiritual gifts and abilities… but the first step to any progress will be building a powerful meditation practice for yourself. I teach a form of meditation that can help “get you there” faster and easier than you ever thought possible. Click here to get started today >>>

Going Home: Moving Inward Through Meditation

You know the saying “home is where the heart is.” It’s the feeling you get when you return from a long day at work and your dog is waiting at the front door, jumping up and down to greet you. Or your kids rush over to give you a hug. Or you open the front door and enter your peaceful solitary sanctuary. You kick off your shoes, turn on the TV, and relax. You’re home.

Well, I see it somewhat differently. For me, home is the heart space I return to each morning in meditation. Sitting still in the wee hours of the morning and sinking into the flow of subtle energies that naturally arise after decades of committed practice is my home base.

Have you ever visited a new place and suddenly felt like you knew it? You knew just where to turn, knew the smell of the air, and felt like you looked just like the people who lived there.

A friend of mine had that experience when she first went to the foothills of the Himalayas in India. Although she’d been born and raised in New York City, a far cry from the sacred hills of the sub-continent, she immediately identified a remote village as “home.” It was as if she’d landed back in a past life, a happy life, and was delighted to have finally found where she “belonged” on earth.

That’s how I felt when I landed in the space of meditation. I knew that place. I belonged there. And it brought me great comfort and a sense of security, just like the feeling of “home.”

As a spiritual teacher, I’m often asked by my students whether they are living in the “right” place. Some live in the same town, and possibly the same house, they grew up in, and where their parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents lived. Others live in relative isolation from family, and have created their “home” space by relying on a circle of friends.

Some think moving here or there will change their lives for the better, and sometimes that is true—a better job, a larger social network with the potential for finding a mate, a healthier climate for your particular body can be beneficial. But before making any drastic changes in your life, think about reversing your thought process and instead of moving outward, first try moving inward.

Meditation can change everything in your life—your health, your stress and anxiety level, your love life. Even if you’re waking up in a different hotel room every day, even if there is no partner or dog to greet you when you get back, even if you rarely see your family or friends, you can carry your home around with you, like the turtle carrying its shell. And like the turtle, you can withdraw into your portable home at any time to recharge and revitalize your energy and reawaken your connection to the deepest feeling of home that exists—your connection to your own Higher Self, the sacred space of knowing you are part of the All. No matter how isolated you may be from others on the physical plane, you are held in the warm embrace of the interconnected web of energies that you access through meditation.

Ellen DeGeneres compares meditation to shutting down your computer when it goes crazy, and when you reboot, it’s all okay again. Paul McCartney calls it a “lifelong gift.” Nicole Kidman uses a meditation app on her phone to time her 20-30 minute session every day. Jerry Seinfeld says meditation is what got him through the intense nine years of writing, producing, and acting in his TV show. Jane Fonda calls it the secret to aging gracefully. George Lucas based Yoda, the sage of Star Wars, on the founder of a meditation practice. And the list goes on and on. These celebrities (and many, many more) have found they can carry “home” with them.

So if you find yourself longing for the comfort of “home,” learn to meditate. I provide a path to learning a special kind of mantra meditation designed to release stress and heighten your intuitive powers>>>

You’ll be able to go home, any time, anywhere.

Stay Connected! How You Can Keep the Faith in Challenging Times

When asked about the certainties of human life, how would you answer? The comedian in you might reply: “Nothing is sure but death and taxes.” It makes a clever quip. When you think deeply about it, though, you might say that the greatest constants are change and challenge. Cycles of change are built into the cosmos—from the seasons to the tides to the movement of the stars. And challenge? What are the challenges you face every day from the small mishaps in your personal life to the global scale tragedies you hear about in the news and witness on television?  Even if change and challenge are constants in our world, it doesn’t mean that you can’t live your life with a joyful and open heart. All you need is to create some powerful constants of your own!

What’s constant in your life? It’s all the things you love, all your values, and all that you believe in. You have a unique set of gifts and talents, and you are here to use them. Exploring who you are and what you can do is the first step in preparing yourself to embrace change and weather challenges. I have faced a dizzying array of changes and challenges in my life—things I never would have believed possible. Somehow all of them have fed into my spiritual growth and development and opened the true path I am meant to follow in this life. Just in the last twelve months, I’ve experienced everything from physical challenge (falling off a cliff!) to heart-wrenching changes (wrapping up a decade of weekly contact with my online Hay House Radio listeners). The changes and challenges of my life have made me the spiritual teacher and energy healer I am today. The same can be true of you as you open the door to your own true calling.

The challenging times you face today—and the world is supplying plenty of them—can become the components of your spiritual growth and your joyful future. As you pick up the pieces that change creates and meet the challenges ahead, you shape the future. By finding your constants and using them to stay connected to all that helps you heal, thrive, and grow, you fulfill your unique destiny. Your ability to face challenge and embrace change can become the keystones of your spiritual toolkit.

Here are some ways you can stay connected in challenging times:

Maintain your spiritual practice. What keeps you grounded in uncertain times? When your day (or your life) is threatening to go off the rails, what do you do to pull it back together? Here’s where your deep knowledge of your beliefs and values comes into play. Meditation is an ancient practice used to calm and focus the mind and bring your complete self into balance and peace. If you have a meditation practice, lean in and see if there is even more joy and comfort to be found there. If you still need to create your meditation practice, find an experienced teacher to guide and support your efforts. Your yoga and exercise regimens also offer the chance to ground and center yourself. Prayer is another way to reach out and connect yourself to Source energy. Do you dance, sing, write, paint, or use other creative activities to stay connected? Tough times are no time to postpone your spiritual practice. Its purpose, after all, is to help you through such days. Plug in to the ultimate power of Source!

Let the truth set you free. Part of discovering your loves, values, and beliefs is being completely honest with yourself. A daily journal is the best tool I can recommend for opening your heart on paper, for giving yourself permission to be truthful. Over many years, you may have built up layer upon layer of stories about yourself—many for your own good as you perceive it. How many of these stories are true? Do they really serve you any longer? You can use your journal entries to record your feelings as they occur and examine them to test their truthfulness. Have you been honest with yourself? Discovering the truth about your feelings and coming to terms with them gives you the power to forgive yourself and others. Forgiveness, based on your truth, opens the door to the healing power of self-acceptance and self-love. Clearing the channel for connection to your inner self helps you connect to others and to Source.

Join hands and serve. The changes and challenges you face in your life can be the tie that binds you to a community of like-minded friends. Your challenges can also equip you to be of service to others who are feeling the wounds that you have already survived. When you make spiritual study, classes, and workshops part of your practice, you cross paths with seekers on the same journey who become part of your healing community. Joining together in community strengthens your power to form life-sustaining connections and also to serve the world. No matter what seems to be going terribly wrong in the world at large, imagine how good it feels to spend a morning packing lunches for the homeless, teaching an adult learner to read, or visiting a nursing home patient who never leaves her room. By simply joining hands at home, you help build connections that can heal the world!

For the past 10 years I have been so fortunate to share my love of all things energy healing with you on my weekly Hay House Radio show. While this Tuesday will be my final show at Hay House… it’s absolutely not a goodbye.

I’ve been busy at work building a platform and a show format that will revolutionize the way we can connect and interact: face to face, on a weekly basis and available for you to listen and watch live or on your own schedule in a variety of formats.

Three Ways to Become the Healer You are Destined to Be

How to Become an Energy Healer: 3 Essential Steps

As you look around our world today, what are the greatest needs you see? People are fleeing from conflict, seeking safety, shelter, food, and medical care. Others are seeking employment, care and education for their children, and most of all hope. At the same time, the natural world shows signs of incredible stress. Worrisome changes in terrain, weather, plant and animal populations remind us that human stewardship of the earth is a sacred bond that must be honored. There is no denying the work that needs to be done. Do you feel in your heart that you have a role to play in meeting these needs, in helping, nurturing, and healing the world? You know you have gifts, you know you can help, but how exactly do you begin?

In fact, you are the starting point.

As Louise Hay reminds us, “the power is within you!” When you ask what you can do to create a life filled with love and a world filled with joy and peace, consider this. You have the right stuff, you have the connection, you have the gifts and talents to turn everything around. You have the power just because of who you are—a child of the Divine, a being of light here to heal, thrive, grow, and to make your own unique and amazing contribution.

If fear tries to tell you the world doesn’t need you, that you can’t make a difference, that no one can see your light, remember who you are. You have the power to clear the fear, heal the hurt, open the doors and windows of your soul to a bright new day. And what a blessing that will be for a troubled world depending on you to step forth into the light and join a healing community powered by love.

Never doubt the power of Source to help you along the path you were meant to follow.

Years ago as a twenty-something lawyer, I never would have guessed that I would end up as an energy healer and spiritual teacher, but here I am. My relationship with energy healing developed from my soul’s cry for wellness, knowledge, and purpose. First, I struggled to be healed. As I climbed the spiritual ladder, I discovered more and more wonders of the Source of All Being that were available to any heart filled with forgiveness, gratitude, and love. As I benefited from energy healing, so I began using the same modality to help others. Today, as a teacher of energy medicine, I pass on the gift and work to grow the network of healing ever wider.

Could this be your path as well?

When you look at the needs of the world and yearn to be a force filled with healing love, you may have your answer. The first step on the path towards your calling as a healer begins with consciously deciding that you wish to devote your life to the healing of yourself and others. This basic generosity and nurturing nature are what brought you here. You are drawn to expand your spirit and tap in to the healing power of unconditional love.

Here are three ways you can shift into a higher spiritual gear and accelerate your movement toward greater spiritual growth and the gift of healing that you are destined to share:

1. Explore and bring forth your higher self.

The great philosophers of the ancient world advised students to “know thyself.” To know yourself, you must dwell in a mind-set of self-reflection and self-understanding. Use your spiritual practices of meditation, prayer, and journaling to discover how you feel about everything that has occurred to you in the past and is happening to you right now.

There is nothing to criticize or judge; you simply want to know and understand your inner world. As you explore your beliefs and values, admit your mistakes and accept yourself with love, you free yourself from fear and negativity. You open the door to expressing your higher self and become the powerful being you were meant to be.

2. Forgive yourself and grow in compassion.

Self-forgiveness plays a key role in your spiritual evolution and the ability to help others. The number one issue blocking your free access to the light of spirit is blaming yourself. It’s the biggest problem I find in working with others—human beings are just too hard on themselves! Therefore, in addition to recognizing and expressing your feelings honestly, the most powerful action you can take to grow in spirit is to accept and forgive your frailties. Accepting your humanness sets you free to give yourself the healing gift of compassion and unconditional love. As you grow in self-compassion so you free yourself to feel compassion for others and open your heart to the gifts of healing within.

3. Build your connection to Source.

Source is the wellspring of all the unconditional love, compassion, and healing light you are seeking. With a regular practice of connecting to Source, whatever that may mean for you—and without fear and negativity—you’ll find a sudden expansion of space for more light to come into your life. There’s enough room in you energetically for your higher-self qualities to be downloaded from the chakras above your head and come right into your energy field. The powerful gifts you always knew you had but couldn’t quite access will begin to manifest. Your strong connection to Source can help you become a vehicle for the higher qualities you need to follow your calling and become the powerful healer you are meant to be.

Getting in touch with your inner light will open the door to your higher self. Dedicated inner work is one of the primary ways you obtain your divine gifts. Your strong connection to Source helps you grow your intuition, knowledge, and understanding, and you start to experience the loving qualities of your true essence. Spiritual growth leads to inner peace and from inner peace comes the power to create peace in the world along with the healing gifts you are here to share.

Stuck in neutral?

hard choice

Well, I’ve finally gotten around to writing about procrastination. I guess there’s a reason I often repeated Scarlett O’Hara’s words in Gone With The Wind: “I’ll think about it tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day.” Indeed, we all do it. We put off till tomorrow what we don’t want to face today. It can go on indefinitely. There are, however, consequences to not moving forward in your life, to not embracing change. Emotions get buried deep inside, trouble ensues.

What’s interesting is that procrastination doesn’t come from laziness. Believe it or not, that “lazy bum” who can’t get off the lounge chair in front of the TV has a lot in common with the spiritual seeker who frequently blows off meditation practice. It all comes down to self-love: loving yourself enough to get into gear and do what you know you have to do in order to be the person you want to be.

So how do you start the ball rolling? How do you finally get off the couch and walk into the rest of your life? That’s what I’ve just written about in a blog for The Huffington Post. You can read it and comment there http://www.huffingtonpost.com/deborah-king/what-if-tomorrow-never-co_b_9088122.html?utm_hp_ref=gps-for-the-soul&ir=GPS+for+the+Soul.

3 Simple Steps to Connect to Your Higher Self

Daily invitation for the Divine to enter your life.

Have you noticed all the bright and beautiful magazine covers inviting you to “Be Your Best Self” and “Live Your Best Life”? Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? When you turn the page, you discover they want you to cook a fabulous meal, decorate with artistic flair, and show up for the party in a stunning new dress. You feel pretty disappointed if that is the best your “best self” can do. You know in your heart there is so much more to you than meets the eye, and you’d really like to open that avenue to love, happiness, and peace.

As an energy healer and spiritual teacher, I’ve learned that the “best you” is really a higher you–your Higher Self, the part of you that is connected, always, to Spirit. In India, there is a saying that “God, Guru, and Self are One.” The same Power that created the universe–God or Source or Spirit—is also within you. You and Spirit are one. You don’t have to go anywhere or seek anything outside to find God. You only have to look within. And there you will find your real best self—your Higher Self—waiting to infuse your life with all the goodness you desire. Your Higher Self, in itself a part of the Divine, is much wiser and far more loving than your small self, or personality. It goes far beyond your everyday awareness and can transport you into transcendent realms. Your Higher Self contains all the very best parts of you that you incarnated into this lifetime to develop. It is a little bit like having a close friend living in your house, but you can’t see or hear them. You can’t reach this friend through any of your usual five senses, but intuitively you know your friend is there. You may doubt your connection to the Divine, but as you continue to look within, you will come to believe in the reality of your Higher Self and you will learn how to communicate with it.

Your Higher Self is a perfect being made of light and love—it’s you, the ideal version of you—and thus can offer guidance no one else can. When you align with your Higher Self, you are in touch with your soul and can experience Divine love and feel the effects of understanding that you are part of the interconnected world. Knowing you are loved unconditionally will make you more compassionate and loving toward others. Divine love will radiate through you and spread like ripples out into the world, becoming that gift of peace and good will you want to share today and always.

Although you are always connected to your Higher Self, there are ways to strengthen your alignment and make your connection clearer and more focused. Your Higher Self is within you, and you have the power to keep your point of contact with the Divine open and flowing. Here are some steps to take:

  1. Remember who you are. You are a child of the Divine and have the power to create your world with love, happiness, and inspiration. No need to waste precious attention on fear and doubt.
  2. Use your intuition. You have a channel of communication always available. Be open to the messages of Spirit. Use meditation to quiet your mind. Ask for what you need to know and be ready to receive.  Invite the Divine to enter your life each day.
  3. Make sure you feel good. Use healing practices to clear anything that might be blocking your connection to your Higher Self. When joy and gratitude and creative energy fill your heart, that is, when you feel good, your alignment with Spirit is healthy and strong.

When you are called upon to be your best self, during the holidays and every day, your Higher Self is always with you, waiting to guide and empower you with the spark of the Divine. Drawing from within, you will have all the energy you need to meet the world with love and grace.

Meditation

“There is no need to go to India or anywhere else to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room…”

–Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Many people think that the purpose of meditation is to tune out, to get away from it all. While that’s partially true, the real purpose of meditation is actually to tune in. There are gaps between your thoughts, and meditation is a way to get into those gaps, and while you’re there, to connect to the universal energy field—the field of All That Is, source, or God.

The best method of meditation that takes you into the universal field involves internally repeating a mantra. A mantra is an ancient seed sound—a syllable or portion of scripture—that was discovered by very advanced, very wise seers some 5-10,000 years ago and preserved in the ancient Vedic texts. Those wise elders, men and women, were able to determine what sounds would transport us through the portal and into the unified field of all information.

These special sounds, or mantras, are chosen and given to a meditator by their teacher, who uses quite a bit of discernment, training and ritual to choose the right sound for that student in that moment in time. The seed sound is sacred and should be kept private and treated with reverence. Once whispered to a student by a teacher, it should not be spoken aloud by the student, only heard internally. It is not to be told to or taught to others. If I teach you to meditate (which I do online), I send you your personal mantra ahead of time.

When to meditate:

The best times to meditate are 1) when you first wake up in the morning—before coffee or exercise, before breakfast or a shower, before you check your email, before you even leave the bedroom; 2) then again in the evening, right after work and before dinner. If you try to meditate when you’ve just eaten a large meal, or when you’re very sleepy or hungry, it won’t work as well. And meditating after dinner or much after 6:00pm can make it hard to go to sleep afterwards.

What to expect from meditation/what might occur:

Meditation raises your consciousness, and in the process it rights anything that is wrong. This includes issues from your life, including long ago, that you’re working through. With meditation, you’re getting rid of the energy from traumas or the energy of others that is in your system and causing you trouble.

As a result, during meditation, some people will see faces or other images representing traumas or issues they are working through, some will hear sounds, some will feel vibrations or other sensations through their body. This is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about. Just don’t focus on it and simply return to the mantra.

Meditation is not just for the things that are wrong, for processing negative things in your psyche; it is also for everything that’s already right, because it elevates us to perfection. Meditation will make the things that are right for you even better. It turns health around and is life-saving—and it gives you joy.

It also helps develop your connection to other planes and spiritual beings. If you naturally have some perceptive abilities, you will find that the information you receive will become more valid once you begin meditating properly. It’s usually right after you meditate, not during, that you’ll get your best perceptions.

You can also expect to have some pretty wonderful and amazing spiritual experiences when you meditate this way. In fact, an effective meditation practice is the one prerequisite to having what’s known as an initiation—a spiritual step up in consciousness.

The most important reason to meditate

The most important outcome of your meditating for 20 minutes twice a day is that you are helping every other sentient being on the planet. If you want to do your part to save the world—when you hear the news and you see devastating images on your TV or computer screen, or you worry about whatever’s really bothering you—go meditate.

By doing so, you are actually sending out a ripple of your higher consciousness into the unified field that can change the world. Be the change you want to see!

Simple Steps for Meditation

Everyone is super busy and frantic these days, so it feels even more difficult to find time to slow down. With all of the extra technology today, we have all become mega-experts at multi-tasking. So how do you find time to take a deep breath and slow down?

The good news is you can slow down if you take the time to find your inner serenity and peace and make it a habit to meditate daily. With daily meditation, not only will you feel the amazing benefits on your mind, body, and soul, but you will find that your productivity will increase as well, so it truly behooves you to give daily meditation a shot!

There are some simple steps to help you fit meditation into your busy schedule:

Step One is to meditate when you first wake up! This one is the easiest to add to your daily routine because it happens before you shower or eat or check email and start feeling all those distractions that pull you in a million different directions. Start your day right!

Step Two is to try to find time later in the day before dinner for a second daily meditation. This one might be tougher if you work in a busy office all day, but not impossible! Try closing your door and putting a “Do Not Disturb” note on it for a few minutes or asking your assistant to hold all calls for a little while. You’ll notice this afternoon meditation time will revitalize you and get you through the rest of your day.

Step Three is to make sure your meditation space is shielded from noises and distractions. It sounds impossible to find absolute quiet these days, but a few simple things you can do to minimize the noise and help yourself slip into that place of silence are turning off the ringer on your phones (both cell phone and landline, if you have both) and the sound on your computer. You’d be surprised how even the silent ringer on your phone or the click of a new email arriving in your inbox can distract you from your task at hand!

There are a few other easy hints to help you add daily meditation to your life which you can read about in my latest article in Om Times at: https://omtimes.com/2012/06/finding-the-calm-in-your-frantic-day/

Beating the April Shower Blues!

Are April showers making you blue? You are not alone. Many people experience a mood change when the weather changes. Grayer skies means less sunlight, and countless studies have demonstrated that a decreased amount of sunlight can incite melancholy and sadness. Your tendency on these darker days may be to stay in bed, watch endless hours of TV, eat comfort foods full of heavy carbs, and feel downright sluggish and sad.

Guess what? You don’t have to feel that way on account of those pesky April showers! You are a positive, sunny, happy person inside and you have all the power to change your attitude and MAKE your day sunny no matter what color the sky is outside!

The change first starts with your attitude and perception. Do you want to wallow in sadness and feel lazy and unmotivated all day? Or do you want to reap the benefits of LOVING your life and enjoying each and every moment? There is absolutely nothing stopping you from being happy on a dark, rainy day.

Let’s start with how you are looking at those April showers themselves. Rain is actually quite beneficial and important, because it provides the fresh water making our rivers flow, filling our lakes and keeping our plants alive and thriving. We cannot imagine our life without water. So perhaps instead of waking up to the sound of rain and thinking, “oh ick, it’s a horrible day outside,” you can change your perception and instead think, “oh how wonderful, my plants are getting nourished, the trees will be happy, and I am so truly thankful for this natural blessing.” You may not be able to change the weather outside, but you can certainly change your feelings about it.

You can also busy yourself with healthy, positive activities that will feed your soul. Why not explore hobbies that will motivate, stimulate and sharpen your inner creativity? Have you always wanted to try painting, drawing, knitting, or scrapbooking? What about dancing, singing, playing an instrument, or even just listening to your favorite music? Or finding a comfy place to settle down and dive into that book you have been wanting to read, but never seem to find the time or space to do so? Anything that feeds your creativity, mind and expression will feed your positive attitude on a gloomy day. Positive activities can go a long way!

A rainy day is a fabulous day to write in your journal and add in some extra meditation time! Sip a nice cup of afternoon tea or take a long, luxurious bath. You can raise your level of self-awareness, reflection, and energy! Let the soothing sound of the rain calm your stress and help bring you to a peaceful frame of mind.

Feeling lonely and don’t want all the solace and peace? Why not use this time to build your relationships? Try reaching out to a close friend or spending more quality time indoors with family members. A phone call with a loved one can do wonders to boost your energy and outlook. Or how about playing board games with your family and friends? You can find hours of fun entertainment that will lift your energy and attitude, and bring you closer to the ones you love — it’s a win-win for everyone!

You can take advantage of the time indoors and be productive. You can tackle that closet reorganization you’ve been putting off or conquer that work research you were procrastinating. If you cross off one item from your usual to-do list (despite the April showers outside), you may feel better about how you spend the rest of your day.

Feeling adventurous? When we were kids, we were far more likely to put on our galoshes and run outside to splash in the puddles. When was the last time you jumped in a puddle and played in the rain?

It may surprise you how awesome and fun it is to let go and enjoy the blessings from the sky! And how free and happy you can be if you let yourself feel that way…You have the power to beat the blues brought on by April showers and make every day an enjoyable day filled with positive activities. And the best part is, you can tap into this power on snowy days, sunny days, work days, school days, any day…Try starting your everyday with this sunny attitude. Smile first thing in the morning. See what a difference that alone can make…

Spring Clean Up

Dust off those cobwebs, it is high time for some spring cleaning! No, I am not talking about your closets (though they probably could use a good cleaning too) – I am referring to all that clutter you have in your mind! Are you living someone else’s dream? Are your own priorities collecting dust, having been pushed to the back of your mind? Is your daily life not reflecting the world in which you wish to live? Are you stressed out? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are overdue for a good spring clean up!

Take advantage of your spring energy to clean your mind and set some new goals and boundaries for yourself following these 5 simple tips:

  1. Start your spring clean up by tossing out the old!
Get rid of those old, tired ways of thinking that are dragging you down. No more negativity, self-doubt, and self criticism. Stop yourself when you feel that familiar Negative Nelly creep up on you. You want to see and feel the new, fresh you and that person is the happy, nurturing, loving you! Let her come out and shine this spring!
  2. Clean your mind from all those emotions that are dragging you down!
How often do you find yourself obsessing over “what could have been” or “what should have been”? These thoughts are holding you back from moving forward and healing. Let yourself experience them, then move on. There is no reason to dwell on the past that cannot be changed. Focus on the present and future! There is so much sunshine to be enjoyed!
  3. Reconnect with the positive people in your life!
Healthy relationships are important and are one of the best ways to boost your mental health! It is a wonderful gift to yourself to stay in touch with friends and family who brighten your days and are a positive influence on you. You may not be able to help it if your boss is a Negative Nelly and causes you constant stress, but you can control who you spend your free non-working time with, so make a choice to clean your mind and surround yourself with positive energy!
  4. Reduce your Daily Stress!
One of the best ways to jump-start your mental spring clean up is by making a conscious effort to decrease your stress and anxiety. What better way to do so than through daily meditation? Just 10-20 minutes twice daily will do wonders to create more harmony and balance in your daily life. You will find you will approach problems from a completely different angle and will be a much calmer, happier you.
  5. Try Something New and Fresh!
It is good for you to step outside your comfort zone every so often and try something new and fresh. Whether it’s making plans to take a trip to someplace you have never been (but always dreamed about going), taking a cooking class, learning a new language, planning a picnic with your family, or trying out a new local restaurant, making plans and activities that are new and exciting to you will make your life feel fresher and more stimulating!

Embrace these five simple suggestions to heart, and you will not only reinvigorate, but also clean your mind! You know how great you feel once you have cleaned out your closets and your drawers and reorganized your house?… Well, that wonderful, clean feeling can be echoed when you do a good spring clean up of your mind!

The Price We Pay

Have you ever wondered whether small, constant headaches are the price we pay for living in a hyper-charged, over stimulated society? For me, tension headaches were a daily companion as I went through college and law school. I thought they were par for the course and was a little surprised when I found out that others did not routinely suffer from them.

Women are more likely to develop tension headaches than men quite possibly because we are trained from birth to suppress our feelings. Society rewards us for handling career, family, household, and community responsibilities without missing a beat or feeling exhausted.  But for many of us, it can be a burden—feeling so disconnected between our inner emotional struggles and the outward calm we present to the world. When we hide from the truth, we don’t allow our energy to flow freely in our bodies resulting in ill health in the form of tension headaches.

Here are three things that you can do to find relief from the pain because our fast-paced society is not going to change…only we can:

  • Identify when and how you feel when you experience them. Determining if they are primary headaches (such as migraines) or secondary headaches (caused by other illnesses or triggers) will help you treat them.
  • Honestly, assess the rhythm of your day and determine if stress, food or sleep patterns may be triggering your tension headaches.
  • Mix alternative medicine techniques with any conventional medical treatments that you may be receiving. Our clients have received headache relief from journaling, more regular exercise, yoga, meditation, prayer, massage, and balancing their chakras through energy healing.

Creating Your Oasis

My life can be insanely busy. Sometimes, I am going in so many different directions at once that I need a few air traffic controllers just to handle the logistics. But I am able to not only survive but actually thrive in the midst of what might seem like chaos to everyone else. Want to know my secret? I have an oasis of calm at my very core that I draw from all the time. I can help you find that space too.

Otherwise, the pace of modern life and the onslaught you face each day from more than six billion people on the planet and the ever-present sound and fury of the media are enough to leave you constantly gritting your teeth (if you’re not already grinding them at night—mouth guard, anyone?). And that’s just the static that comes from the outside world. You also have emotional issues and physical stresses that have collected over the course of a lifetime that add to the energetic din in your head (thanks to those old fear-based tapes that keep playing in your mind). It’s no wonder so many are popping anti-anxiety and anti-depression drugs like candy these days.

You may at first think this doesn’t apply to you. But think again. Is your phone or your iPod always in your ear? Is your TV blaring in the background 24/7? How many e-mails or tweets did you send just yesterday? So many never have a moment of peace and quiet to check in with themselves internally. So the first step to creating an inner oasis of calm is to actively create habits like meditating and journaling, both of which help clear the backlog in your mind so you can see not just the forest, but also the trees. Both of these tools will go a long way in helping you keep your sanity.

If you’re afraid that you’ll be wasting your time, know that these things are practices, and the more you give to any practice, the more you will get out of it. In fact, I can just about guarantee you that before long, you’ll be absolutely amazed at what comes up for you.

Meditation helps because it works at a deep level of consciousness to give you access to whatever information you need to restore your life to harmony. Tons of studies have shown the benefits of meditation, including the way it improves a host of physical conditions and fosters peace of mind. There are four levels of awareness: waking, sleeping, dreaming, and the meditative state, which is a much more expansive type of awareness. In the spaciousness of meditation, you slip into the gap that exists between thoughts—the entrance to the infinite universe, called by many names: Spirit, Source, God, Universal Energy Field, or simply the Unified Field.

In this vastness, we are One, connected to each other and All That Is, with access to pure unlimited energy. Here, anything and everything can be accomplished. The noise of daily life abates and our minds and hearts and bodies can come into balance. Think of meditation as a giant broom for sweeping away any stagnant or blocked energy that you may have buried deep in your body. You are cleansed at a deep level, and now can allow an effervescent stream of creative energy to bring beauty and innovation to your life and to the world. And you don’t have to do it for hours a day. Even just 20 minutes of meditation will refresh you as much as several hours of sleep.

While meditating connects you to the universe, journaling connects you to your very core. So often, when life gets too difficult or a situation threatens us, we get scared and stuff our emotions. We may not think we have a right to be angry, for example, so we don’t express it. But that doesn’t mean that our anger goes away. We can’t wish away reality any more than we can wish away gravity. Journaling helps you uncover emotions you’ve been pushing down so you can deal with them in a healthy way by processing them. Beneath almost any problem is truth waiting to be acknowledged and set free. You may have heard me say this a time or two, but I’ll say it again anyway: truth heals. But it can’t heal you unless you uncover it and confront it. And journaling is one of the simplest and safest tools I know for doing that.

So give both meditation and journaling a try. Then share your experience with me on Facebook. I can’t wait to hear your stories!
