Wake Up!

Wake Up!

I was asked recently to share some of my wisdom and life lessons in just a few words. I chose to share one of the most important lessons in life that I believe everyone can live and learn by, and that is the lesson of waking up. I tell a story about the Buddha that will help you see the importance of being awake.

According to the ancient seers, we are really asleep, dreaming that this world is real. Actually, everything we’re dealing with is an illusion. It is essential to feel and live in the present moment and understand what that means for you and everyone around you, but at the same time to realize how illusory it all is. That way, you won’t let your past weigh you down or be frightened of what the future may hold.

We are all part of a Oneness that connects us all. Humanity is larger than all of us as individuals. If everyone would do their part to wake up, our humanity as a whole would be in a much higher and blessed state. On a smaller scale, however, it is time for each of us to wake up as individuals. You alone have to power to make yourself happier, healthier and more aware of your meaning here on earth.

Simple Steps for Meditation

Everyone is super busy and frantic these days, so it feels even more difficult to find time to slow down. With all of the extra technology today, we have all become mega-experts at multi-tasking. So how do you find time to take a deep breath and slow down?

The good news is you can slow down if you take the time to find your inner serenity and peace and make it a habit to meditate daily. With daily meditation, not only will you feel the amazing benefits on your mind, body, and soul, but you will find that your productivity will increase as well, so it truly behooves you to give daily meditation a shot!

There are some simple steps to help you fit meditation into your busy schedule:

Step One is to meditate when you first wake up! This one is the easiest to add to your daily routine because it happens before you shower or eat or check email and start feeling all those distractions that pull you in a million different directions. Start your day right!

Step Two is to try to find time later in the day before dinner for a second daily meditation. This one might be tougher if you work in a busy office all day, but not impossible! Try closing your door and putting a “Do Not Disturb” note on it for a few minutes or asking your assistant to hold all calls for a little while. You’ll notice this afternoon meditation time will revitalize you and get you through the rest of your day.

Step Three is to make sure your meditation space is shielded from noises and distractions. It sounds impossible to find absolute quiet these days, but a few simple things you can do to minimize the noise and help yourself slip into that place of silence are turning off the ringer on your phones (both cell phone and landline, if you have both) and the sound on your computer. You’d be surprised how even the silent ringer on your phone or the click of a new email arriving in your inbox can distract you from your task at hand!

There are a few other easy hints to help you add daily meditation to your life which you can read about in my latest article in Om Times at: https://omtimes.com/2012/06/finding-the-calm-in-your-frantic-day/

Cutting Back Caffeine: When is it Too Much Caffeine for you?

Many people enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning to help conquer those early mornings. Others reach for a soda in the later afternoon for a little boost of energy to keep themselves going. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying some caffeine, I urge you to consider cutting back if it’s causing you problems.

So how do you know if you are getting too much caffeine?

From an Ayurveda standpoint, your sensitivity to caffeine depends on what your dosha type is. Ayurveda is the ancient Hindu science of health and medicine. Practiced for more than 5,000 years, Ayurveda’s holistic science focuses on maintaining a physically and emotionally balanced state. In Ayurveda, every individual is unique and there is no diet or lifestyle routine that works for everyone. This is precisely why caffeine may be fine for some but a problem for others.

Ayurveda theory states that the five elements of space, air, earth, fire and water make up everything in the universe, including the human body. These five elements come together to create three different doshas, or energies that make up each individual. Knowing your dosha type will help you determine how sensitive you may be to caffeine and whether you might need to make some changes in your drinking habits.

The three Dosha types are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata consists of air and space elements; Pitta consists of fire and water elements; and Kapha consists of earth and water elements.

If you are a Pitta – that is, if you have a lot of the fire element already present in your body – caffeine is likely to cause you problems. Pittas are already fired up and the extra heat, acidity and dryness that coffee brings can cause problems. Vatas and Kaphas have far less issues with caffeine, because of their constitution.
But the main culprit is the high acidic quality to your drink. You may have been fine in your twenties and thirties drinking coffee everyday, but for Pittas, who are prone to more sensitive digestion, there is a high likelihood that as you age, your sensitivity to caffeine intensifies. By the time you are around age 40-55, you may be facing a lot of side effects from caffeine that you never experienced a few years before!

The other issue with caffeine is that it is hard on your adrenal glands. As a stimulant, it gives you a boost and causes you to run on false energy. You are actually draining yourself and exhausting your adrenal glands. Ever notice how you often end up more tired and sluggish on the days you drink a lot of coffee and soda? Sounds backwards, but it really isn’t!

What can you do to combat this sensitivity?

Well the obvious answer is to cut back on your caffeine intake. If you notice you are drinking too much caffeine, try limiting it to one cup in the morning, and then switching from coffee to herbal tea. You can also try using exercise as a natural stimulant to help your body wake up in the morning and give yourself a natural high.

And here’s another important tip. Coffee is super dehydrating so one of the most important steps you can take is to hydrate yourself constantly. Drink more water! A great rule of thumb to use is: For every cup of coffee, caffeinated tea or soda you drink, drink an equal amount of water at the same time. Keep yourself hydrated and it will diminish any side effects from coffee.

Summer Solstice Celebration: Tap into the Mayan Energy!

Our Summer Solstice is just around the corner! June 20th is the day we celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and what a magnificent day it is! The Summer Solstice is a magical time in the year when you can connect to the ancient Mayan energy and recharge your mind, body and spirit.

The word “solstice” comes from the Latin terms “sol” meaning “sun” and “sistere” meaning “to stand still.” Our Summer Solstice is the day when the sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from our hemisphere and appears to stand still before it heads south again. It is the day when the tilt of our planet in its hemisphere is most inclined towards the sun. It is also the longest day and shortest night of the year. While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere celebrate in June, folks in the Southern half of the Earth have their Summer Solstice celebration in December.

A major celestial event, the Mayans believed the Summer Solstice to be a time for spiritual initiation and change. They held special ceremonies on the solstice dates to balance the earth’s energy. The Summer Solstice for the Southern Hemisphere this December also happens to be the same date that marks the end of the Mayan calendar. While there are many theories about the significance of the Mayan calendar end and December’s Summer Solstice, I believe that this day signifies a time when our world as we know it will change for the better, and a new consciousness will spread across the Earth. So the Summer Solstice is indeed a time for celebration and change, especially this year in 2012!

Like the Mayans who were very aware of their different states of altered consciousness, you can learn to increase your own consciousness and embody your self-awareness and higher self during this enchanted time. The Summer Solstice is an ideal time for you to let go of your ego and old patterns of suppression and focus on what you wish to bring into your life. This is a time for you to invite the sun’s energy and connect with your higher self. And this is the perfect occasion for you to feel inspired, to follow your dreams, and to truly listen to your higher self.

Here are some tips on how you can embrace your own Summer Solstice celebration and renew yourself this year:

  • Live your truth: Be true to yourself and to others. Listen to your higher self and do what feels right to you.
  • Ground yourself: Hug a tree, lay on the grass, take a walk in nature.
  • Detox with a bath of sea salt and baking soda.
  • Consult your Spirit Guides to assist you in your healing process and to help guide you through changes.
  • Drink lots of water!
  • Make a list of what you wish to bring into your life: people, qualities, events – what do you want to see change?
  • Nurture yourself: this is a great time to lose weight, clean your house, change your nutrition, develop a passion or new hobby.
  • Spend some time outside – enjoy the sunshine!
  • Find time to relax and time that is just “you” time – no kids, family, work – just quiet time for you to let your mind and body refresh itself!
  • Get enough sleep: change can be exhausting on the body! Make sure you get enough zzz’s!
  • Proper Nutrition: it is vital, especially during this time, that you are strong, healthy and balanced.
  • Be open to change and new energy, and you will increase its presence within you!

Great growth and change are just around the corner! The fulfillment you are seeking in your life can be achieved! Listen to your higher self and be open to this wondrous change! Let the Mayan energy in and embrace its power and awareness. Enjoy your Summer Solstice celebration – you are in for a real treat this year!

How to Use a Chakra Pendulum

Using a Chakra Pendulum: A How To Guide

How to Use a Chakra Pendulum

When it comes to evaluating the health of your energy field, a chakra pendulum is one of the best tools in your kit.

In the 30+ years that I’ve been practicing energy medicine, I’ve taught tens of thousands of people how to use a chakra pendulum — from skeptical beginners who are unsure of their own healing capabilities to advanced students in my LifeForce Energy Healing program.

One of the reasons that the simple chakra pendulum remains my favorite tool is because anyone can use it; you don’t need the latest iPhone and chakra balancing app or even a chakra pendulum chart —once you learn to use it, you’ll be able to get information immediately about the location of each chakra and its movement…which makes the process of clearing your chakras much easier!

Anyone can learn how to use chakra pendulum, but it does take a little bit of practice and patience to get results. However, just like learning to ride a bike or play an instrument, once you use it correctly and understand the different chakra pendulum movements, the skill will be with you for life.

I recommend that you start with a conically shaped wood pendulum made from beechwood (not metal, crystal, or stone).

If you don’t have a chakra pendulum yet, the one I use (and recommend) is available for purchase on this site. Click here to add to cart.

Keep your new pendulum close to your body for a few days before using it so that it can soak up your energy. It is important for your pendulum to resonate with your energy. Next, you should bless your pendulum by letting your higher self and your spirit guides know that you would like their assistance in influencing the pendulum’s movement. It is the movement of the pendulum that will serve as your guidance, so you want to be sure you are open and available to the assistance from both your higher self and your spirit guides, and be sure that they know that too. Make sure you do the blessing before each and every pendulum use.

How to use a chakra pendulum

Begin by laying down on your back (or, if you are performing the chakra pendulum exercise on someone else, have them lie on their back on a surface that is tall enough for you to have a comfortable position and not be leaning into them. You do not want to create a “push,” where you are pushing energy from your field into theirs).

** If you need a quick review of the location of the chakras in the body, click here to jump to that section of this page. **

Holding the cord of the pendulum between your thumb and forefinger about 4-6 inches (or 10-15 cm) above each chakra. When the pendulum moves, observe its direction and movement.

chakra moving clockwiseIf the pendulum moves clockwise, that chakra is open, well-balanced, and full.

chakra moving counter clockwiseIf the pendulum moves counter-clockwise, there may be blocked energy or unreleased emotions relating to that specific chakra.

chakra moving ellipitical swingIf the pendulum moves in an elliptical swing, there may be a right- or left-side imbalance of energy flowing in the body. This may be due to overusing the right masculine side or the left nurturing side.

chakra moving erraticallyIf the pendulum moves in an erratic swing, it is possible that you (or the person you are performing the chakra pendulum exercise on) may have recently changed their beliefs or are going through a spiritual upheaval, which can affect the chakra’s movement and cause it to move erratically for a couple of days.

chakra not movingIf the pendulum does not move at all, you may be holding the pendulum in the incorrect location. If that is not the case, then there may be a blockage in that chakra.

Be aware that the size of the pendulum’s circle is a result of your energy field, the pendulum’s energy field and your subject’s energy field all combined together. This means that your own chakra health and the health of your own energy field will have a direct impact on how effective you are at reading others’ chakras.

With practice and experience, you will be able to pick up on all of the different chakra qualities and be able to read whether someone is going through joy, peace, clarity, heaviness, darkness, or depression – all from checking their chakras with your pendulum! Stay patient with yourself as you figure out where the chakras are and how to properly use your pendulum to check them. This skill is indeed a learned and practiced skill that will improve with time and experience. You will see results if you keep at it and practice!

Chakra locations

Before using the pendulum on another, make sure you are very familiar with where the chakras are located.

root chakra pendulum1. Root Chakra: base of the spine.

sexual chakra pendulum2. Sexual Chakra: halfway between the root chakra and the waist.

solar plexus chakra3. Solar Plexus Chakra: halfway between the navel and the breastbone.

heart chakra pendulum4. Heart Chakra: in the center of the chest.

throat chakra pendulum5. Throat Chakra: in the center of the throat.

third eye chakra pendulum6. Third Eye Chakra: between the eyebrows.

crown chakra pendulum7. Crown Chakra: the top of the head.

** Go back up to directions on how to use a chakra pendulum. **

Learning to use a pendulum will help you progress on your journey of inner growth and will connect you to your higher self. You will be amazed at how much easier clearing chakras will be once you know the proper way to check them and where the imbalance lies. So tap into the power of the pendulum and start reading chakras today!

Connecting with Your Spirit Guides

A few years ago my students and I were blessed with an extraordinary experience at a workshop I was leading in Germany. I was visited in the night by powerful spirit guides who poured into me immense energy and light so that I was able to help connect a student to her ancestral spirit guide. Everyone in the room was treated to a visit from a real American Indian Princess!

This magical connection was only possible because of the spirit guides who were present. Everyone has spirit guides – they are your mentors and angels who are waiting by your side to offer guidance and support whenever you are ready and available to accept their help. Their help comes in various forms and as in the case of this workshop, may not even be focused on you directly – but know that they are here to help you if you ask them. They can assist you in discovering your real truth and self-awareness. They can help you reach higher levels of initiation.

To learn more about how to meet your spirit guides and read the full amazing story about the American Indian Princess, please click here to check out my recent article for Hay House’s Heal Your Life.

How to Curb your Emotional Eating and Cut Down on Carbs Today!

Do you find yourself mindlessly inhaling potato chips? Do you nervously devour the entire bread basket at restaurants before your first course even comes to the table? Does your diet consist mostly of comfort foods like pasta and potatoes? Do you find yourself wandering toward the fridge after an upsetting phone call or email? Does a stressful day at work make you want to break out the nachos?

You may very well be an emotional eater, but fear not, you are not alone! The good news is you can curb your emotional eating – you have the power to overcome your struggles with food and weight.

The first step is understanding why and when you turn to stress eating. Everyone does it from time to time, but if you are someone who handles all your difficult emotions by eating – whether you are bored, angry, sad, jealous, or nervous – then you are clearly stuck in a destructive cycle that is not healthy for your mind or your body. Emotional and stress eating is a form of self-medication. While some people turn to alcohol and drugs, others turn to food, especially comfort foods like carbs which trick our bodies into feeling warm and fuzzy and safe. You may be eating to suppress whatever emotions you are feeling, but notice that once you’ve devoured that entire bowl of macaroni and cheese or that big bowl of buttery popcorn, your emotions are still there waiting for you. You usually end up feeling even worse than before you took your first bite. And now your body is going to wear the extra weight from that binge. It’s a lose-lose situation and the resulting shame and feelings of loss of self-control put you in an even worse emotional place than before.

So let’s rewind and think about what you can do before you take that first bite! Make it a habit to grab your journal every time you want to reach for food and answer these questions: Am I really hungry? Am I depressed or anxious? Why do I want this food right now? And really answer yourself honestly? What just happened prior to your craving this food? Are you mad or frustrated or stressed out or exhausted? Is there something else you can do to resolve these emotions rather than numb them with junk food? Perhaps you would feel better if you went for a walk outside or took a warm bath or called a friend. Maybe chewing on something healthy and crunchy like celery would help you keep your mouth busy and help you release those emotions.

One of the causes of your stress eating may also be a result of childhood habits. How was food treated in your household growing up? Were you rewarded with food for good behavior? Was food taken away from you as punishment if you did something bad? Was your family struggling to put food on the table and you now see lots of food as a sign of success? Did your family encourage you to “clean your plate” no matter how full you were? All of these habits are emotional eating habits formed very early in our childhood, but that does not mean they are habits we cannot break. If you are aware of why you eat and when you eat, it will be a lot easier for you to make a point to eat when you actually need to eat and you will be able to control your mindless emotional eating.

You may also have unresolved suppressed emotions from a traumatic or stressful experience that you are protecting yourself with through the comfort of food and emotional eating. Physical or sexual abuse, a difficult relationship or lack of one, divorce, the death of a loved one, or as is becoming more and more common in today’s struggling economy, the loss of a home or job, are all situations that you may be battling and trying to eat your way past.

If you know you are going through a rough patch and your emotions are strong, try not to store them in your body as they will do more harm than good if they are bottled up inside you. Let your truth out and give yourself permission to release these emotions. One of the best ways to do so is to write in a journal everyday. Take a few minutes every evening at the end of your day and write down what is bothering you, what is on your mind, what happened that day…be 100% honest with yourself and don’t sugar-coat or try to be eloquent in your writing. Don’t be harsh on yourself for what you are writing – these are your feelings and they are 100% legit. If you can let yourself be honest with your emotions on paper, you will make fewer trips to the fridge!

If weight has long been a stubborn issue for you, come to one of my in-person workshops and let’s get to the bottom of it together! To sign up for an upcoming workshop near you, please visit my Events page at: /events-workshops//

Working with Animals to Expand Your Gifts

Working with animals

Working in a healing capacity with animals can be a wonderful way to get started expanding your gifts. A Facebook friend, Natalie, told me that the day her beloved dog died, a small, skinny cat walked up the street and came directly to her and her children, as if he knew they needed him. She said the name “George” popped into her head. That night, as the family members were still crying about the sudden death of their dear dog, George purred loudly and rubbed Natalie’s face, clearly telling her that it would be okay. Their new pet made it so much easier for everyone to adjust to the loss of their old one. Animals always know what we need and how to help us – the least we can do is try to heal them when they need our assistance.

I’ve always had lots of pets. When I was a child we had Goldie, a cocker spaniel; a boxer named Teddy; and a whole series of cats. When I went off to college, I even tried to take my beagle puppy with me, but the dorm supervisor made me turn around and drive it back home. What was I thinking?! After I got married, I also had dogs. For example, there was Dolly, our black Lab who would squeeze herself into the smallest space in the car so she fit in with all of the climbing and camping gear. She would then reinflate herself when we reached the campground. And I always had cats, as many as eight at one time.

When I finally accepted the fact that I wasn’t going to have children, I started to collect animals in earnest and lived close to them on a remote ranch in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I began with llamas, which I bred. Llamas are amazing animals! They meditate every day, kneeling and facing the rising and setting sun. The mothers are so devoted to their young and do all of their training with gentle admonitions and little nips, never with anger or violence.

One day I was standing in a field, looking at a possible llama for purchase, when the owner’s horse suddenly galloped up. I was so startled by such a large animal that I quickly climbed a nearby fence for safety; I’d never actually seen a horse up close before! Afterward, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. A few days later, I asked a neighbor if I could ride hers, and the rest was history. I wound up taking a whole year off from my day job as an attorney to immerse myself in what I called “the university of the horse.” Today, I still have my very first horse, named Influence. He is a flashy, black Dutch warmblood, just like the horse in National Velvet. He now lives right outside my kitchen window in well-deserved retired bliss.

Thanks to Influence, I learned to talk to animals and heal them. It began one day after I’d had him for about a month. I was riding through the desert chaparral when I heard him say, “It’s too hot, and my back hurts.” I was so surprised that I almost fell off. I jumped down and looked him in the eye and could see him laughing. He has quite a sense of humor! From that day on, I started listening very carefully and discovered that you can actually hear animals communicate if you simply quiet your mind and use your intention. Those are the same steps I take when I’m getting ready to do healing work with people: I form an intention to listen to them very deeply, way below the level of speech.

I wanted Influence to be familiar with all kinds of animals so he would be less likely to spook. My goal was to avoid a situation where I could easily violate the cardinal rule of always keeping the horse between myself and the ground. That was a great excuse to start a collection: I acquired a dairy calf, a billy goat, chickens, ducks, and a pig, as well as peacocks and ostriches. While I was adjusting Influence to every creature, including the herd of llamas he lived with, I was getting a pretty good education in how to talk to them. I took classes in using healing touch on animals, which is actually quite a solid foundation for doing the same practice on humans, since animals (especially horses) are much more sensitive to touch than people are.

The first step is listening to hear what the animals have to say. They will always tell you what their problem is if you just tune in and listen.

Tips for True Friendship

“The language of friendship is not words but meanings.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

In today’s busy world, supporting and feeding a healthy friendship is not always as easy as it sounds, but it is important that you take the time to make friends, to keep friends, and to be a good friend. As the Beatles song goes, we all get by with a little help from our friends, and that could not be truer! We all need help sometimes and other times, we are needed to help others. Knowing how to be a good friend is the best way to keep a good friend!

Here are some ways you can give and receive the gift of true friendship and nurture your higher self:

  • Make the time.
We are all busy and have a gazillion things on our ‘to do’ plate. It’s not quantity of friends, but quality that defines true friendship, so instead of having two seconds for thirty “casual” friends, why not invest real time with a select group of close friends who are willing to carve out the time for you too? Plan activities in advance and when you really don’t have the time, consider sending a quick email or text to let your friend know you are thinking of them. You will find when you are on the receiving end of this gesture, it can go a long way in brightening your stressful day!
  • Don’t keep score.
True friendship is a two-way street. Don’t be a taker and only call your friend for favors – that kind of behavior will lead to an abusive relationship. Be a giver and do favors for your friends before they even think to ask. Giving truly does feel so much better than receiving. Your soul and higher self will thank you for it.
  • Be present, honest and real.
When you are with your friend, be in the moment. Don’t check your iPhone or blackberry every five minutes over dinner, don’t fall into the habit of not listening (you know that reply of “uh huh” that comes out automatically when you aren’t paying attention….), and don’t hide your feelings from your friend. One of the benefits of true friendship is being able to share feelings and validate each other’s feelings. Open your heart chakra and your higher self and let those feelings in!
  • Don’t let your ego control you.
The ego is very powerful. Make sure you are grounded (daily meditation and journaling can help you) and try to keep your chakras balanced. Take care of yourself emotionally, physically and spiritually, and you will be better able to help others take care of themselves as well. Don’t let all your own issues get in the way of true friendship.
  • Support your friend, even if you don’t support their situation.
This is one of the most valuable and useful tips I can offer you. There are several instances when you may disagree with choices your friend has made, relationships in their life, or situations they are in. Supporting your friend does not mean you need to back up their choice or be in agreement with every situation they are in – but it does mean you can still give and receive true friendship. You can still love and appreciate your friend and offer support in the form of “I don’t love the situation you are in, but I still love you and am here for you.” Forcing your friend to choose when they may already be in a compromised or difficult situation will not help your friend or your friendship with this friend. And try to avoid saying “I told you so” after the fact…
  • Don’t ditch out when the going gets rough.
Everyone has rough patches and tough times in their lives. Maybe you haven’t had a really bad year yet, but you cannot plan when things will go south. Having a true friend by your side can make all the difference in the world as to how you emerge on the other end of your ordeal. So why not be that friend as well? Help your friend conquer their demons and trials and let them know they are not alone.
  • Accept the whole person.
No one is perfect – not even you! Listen to your higher self and get rid of those unrealistic expectations you have of perfection. Realize that your friend is going to have some flaws. Accept your friend for who they are –the good and the bad – and allow them to see your whole you – the good and the bad. Only then can you have the real truth of who you each are, and be able to experience, appreciate and love true friendship openly and honestly.

Promoting Women’s Wellness

Women's Health Week

It’s that time of year again for Women’s Health Week and it’s about time! This year’s theme, “It’s Your Time,” could not be more appropriately titled. Now, more than ever before, it is vital to acknowledge Women’s Health Week and work to empower women today to take charge of their health and take great care of themselves. In the past several months alone, women and their health choices have been under attack and used by politicians as part of a political game more than ever before. There is a war on women going on, and women’s wellness and health issues are at stake. It is high time women take back their power, and both men and women unite together to promote women’s wellness. Let’s make women’s health a top priority in our everyday life! Not just this week, but every week and every year!

Defining Women’s Wellness

Women’s wellness embodies everything in women’s health – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Women tend to put themselves last as many of them try to balance work and family and do it all. Oftentimes, their physical, spiritual and emotional health needs are put last in the long list of daily to-do’s. Women are so focused on taking care of everyone and everything else that they forget to even think about who is taking care of them. It is perplexing to me that so many women aren’t on their own list of priorities, as I believe it is imperative that in order to take care of anyone else’s needs, they really need to be able to handle their own selves first.

So to jumpstart your plan of action, here are some starter tips on ways you can celebrate Women’s Health Week and take better care of yourself and the women in your life today:

Physical Wellness: Taking Care of our Bodies!

  • Visit your healthcare professional/encourage the women in your life to visit their healthcare professional for regular checkups and preventative screenings.
  • Adopt an active lifestyle – make it a point to take walks, exercise, try yoga or Pilates or other mind-body workouts that will not only make you feel better physically, but will also ground you and improve your emotional health.
  • Eat healthy! Proper nutrition and drinking lots of water will go a long way in taking good care of your body.
  • Avoid unhealthy and risky behaviors and habits such as smoking, drinking excessively, and not wearing seatbelts or bike helmets.

Emotional Health: Taking Care of our Minds!

  • Make daily meditations a part of your everyday routine! Twice a day for twenty minutes will go a long way in helping you calm your mind and find your inner peace and sense of self. If you don’t know how to meditate or would like to learn an amazing meditation technique that will take your meditation to a higher level of consciousness, please check out my meditation download available online at: https://deborahking.b.smartzsites.com/learn-to-meditate/
  • Get plenty of Zzz’s! Sleep is important to keeping your stress down and taking care of women’s wellness. You may notice if you fall asleep often during your daily meditations that you may be lacking in the sleep department. Make sure you give your body and mind time to rest and recuperate before you start conquering the next day’s list of to-do’s!
  • Manage your stress better by learning to say ‘no’, making boundaries for yourself and keep them! No one can look out for you better than yourself, so be sure to set some limits so you aren’t overworked and overstressed!
  • Find something that brings you joy in your life – whether it’s an activity or hobby you love to do, or people you love to see who make you feel happy – and make a point to find the time to do it/see them.

Spiritual Calm: Taking Care of our Higher Self and Connecting to Source!

  • Reconnect with your higher self by reconnecting with Mother Nature – take walks through parks, on hiking trails, by the ocean. Appreciate all that our beautiful nature has to offer and feel closer to Source. Or try what I do, sleep outside to get a big dose of nature every night!
  • Journal your thoughts and emotions daily. Writing in a journal daily is one of the most powerful and uplifting tools both women and men can use to find our inner truths. If we can be 100% honest with ourselves, we can be honest with the world and we can connect closer to Source and each other.
  • Empower your Chakras! Daily meditations, taking a bath with sea salt and baking soda, hugging a tree, loving our pets, and tapping into our creativity are just some of the ways we can improve our chakra balance and thus, connect closer to Source. For tips on buffing up your chakras, you can read more in my blog on the Secret Seven at: https://deborahking.b.smartzsites.com/blog/2012/03/25/the-secret-seven-7-tips-to-buff-up-your-chakra-system/

These tips are a springboard towards better health for both men and women, but I urge all of you this week especially to please make a point to help the women in your lives as well as yourself to better nurture their spiritual, physical and emotional health. Too often, we move at such a fast pace in our society that women’s most basic needs get forgotten or left behind. Instead of pushing women’s wellness to the backburner this year, let us make a point of promoting and living it!

The Mother Relationship

Your connection to your mother serves as a major factor in your life today, whether you were adopted or abandoned, whether your mother is still with you or not, no matter how close or distant your relationship was with her growing up. Mother relationships are pivotal in forming a part of who we are now. This Mother’s Day, I encourage you to take a close look at your relationship with your mother through fresh eyes. Ask yourself some deep questions and examine how she helped to form the individual you have become.

Take some time to review your relationship with your mother and thank her for, at a minimum, bringing you into this world.  And please come on over to read my blog which explores the tie that binds us to mom at the Huffington Post here. And if you’ll share the story of your relationship with your mom there, we can all learn from one another.

Connect to Source: Make Prayer Work for You

This week, we celebrate a National Day of Prayer. While you may have an image of getting down on your knees with your hands clasped like the woman in this photo, prayer can take on many various forms that are as equally valid and spiritual as going to church. What makes something a prayer is its ability to carry what we are trying to say at a deep level, but cannot voice directly.

Here are some ideas for ways you can better voice your deepest thoughts and prayers this week and connect to Source:

Read or write a poem.
Reading and writing poetry is a great way to access Spirit and can be a very prayerful experience. I have been a big fan of poetry since I was a teenager and used to listen to old vinyl records of poems like Robert Frost’s “Stopping by the Woods”. Often, poetry can express what you are feeling without having the words to say your feelings out loud. Poems can ground you closer to our Mother Earth and help you connect to Source, all at the same time. Their beauty can lift you to a higher spiritual place.

Get in touch with your artistic inner self.
Doing art as an act of prayer is an embodied, active prayer. If you undertake art with spiritual awareness, it will have a spiritual effect. In this light, creating art is the channel through which an artist’s prayers are manifested. Art as prayer is a conscious connection to the Creator, a true way to connect to Source. So pick up some paper and paints, or even markers, and draw what comes to your mind when you are thinking of your deepest thoughts and wishes.

Listen or create music.
Everyone can get in touch with their inner musical self and create prayer through music, whether it is listening to your favorite songs or singing and chanting your own music. Music can also be used as an introduction to prayer time or to complete the end of prayer. Kirtan chanting is one form of music that can bring you closer to your spiritual self. But even just putting in your favorite CD and listening to beautiful music you love can help you awaken your larger self and your sense of awe, beauty, longing, pain and joy. You can let music act as a vehicle to connect you to Source.

Move yourself into a place of prayer.
Movement itself, whether it is running or doing yoga, dance, pilates, or martial arts, can take you to a higher zone where you feel more connected to Spirit. Movement itself can serve as a form of prayer for you as it can help you transport your feelings and raise your consciousness. Not only will you feel more grounded and healthier in your body itself, but you will be able to put your mind into a place where you can express clearly your innermost thoughts and feelings to your higher Source. Dance especially can lift you and help you express what you are not putting directly into words.

Visit a calming place.
There are places, besides churches, where you are able to feel closer to Spirit and connect to Source through the power of prayer. Often, these are places close to Mother Nature, such as the beach or a park or the mountains. Take a walk and visit one of these places that help put the serenity back into your mind and thoughts and help you feel that closeness with Source. The thoughts and closeness you feel in these places can function as prayer and serve well to lift your soul higher.

Try not to think of prayer as a rigid, rules-based religious obligation. Instead, look at prayer in its most organic and creative light – through poetry, music, dance, and nature. Prayer is a powerful and beautiful tool that can help you achieve your highest consciousness and enlighten your soul, and everyone should feel invited to participate in prayer.

LOL, Laughter Therapy is no Joke!

Laughing zebra promotes laughter medicine

You know the old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine”? Well, you may say it in jest, but take note: there is some validity to the phrase, and laughter as medicine is no joke! Perhaps we can all use a dose of laughter therapy to incorporate, as an addition to energy healing, into our daily lives. On top of making us feel happy and positive, laughter triggers physical changes in our bodies. Research and studies show that humor not only helps patients relieve stress and heal, but laughing and smiling may also play a large role in preventing sickness and disease. There is nothing more healing for your energy than laughter. Laughter will increase your benefits from energy healing. This is because there is a clear connection between our minds and our bodies. Laughter therapy is a valuable tool and a part of your process of energy healing that can be very effective in treating our emotional health, which in turn has a trickle down positive effect on our physical health. Laughter as medicine truly is a wonderful remedy for us all to embrace.

Here are some benefits of laughter and why we should consider investing in some good old-fashioned laughter therapy:

  • Laughter therapy is so easy. Anyone can laugh. Anyone can smile. Anyone can feel good and make others feel good.
  • Laughter is contagious. Everyone feels better when they are laughing and a positive mood will envelop you. Your energy healing and the energy healing of everyone around you will feel uplifted. You and everyone in your positive energy field will truly be closer to Lightness.
  • Laughter as medicine functions as an actual natural medicine – seriously! Laughter releases endorphins that can relieve physical pain.
  • Laughter suppresses the levels of epinephrine, the stress hormone, and lowers your blood pressure. Win-win! Less stress and a calmer, happier you!
  • Laughter therapy can also be added to your physical workout! Ever laugh so hard that your stomach hurts? That is because your stomach muscles and diaphragm are working! Try laughing your way into bikini season!
  • Laughter increases your dopamine, the hormone that regulates your mood, enthusiasm and learning, and also triggers pleasure. Who doesn’t want to feel good? Ummm, more please!
  • Laughter relaxes people and makes them more social. What better way to break the ice during an uncomfortable and awkward situation than to get everyone smiling and laughing? You can practice laughter therapy in public without anyone even knowing it…
  • Laughter can be used in the workplace appropriately to improve productivity and morale. Have you ever been on Southwest Airlines and had one of their spectacular flight attendants make you crack up during their takeoff speech? Southwest is just one company that takes their laughter and humor seriously and makes a point of incorporating it into their business corporate model.
  • Laughter as medicine is a good way to diminish depression. If you are laughing a lot, chances are you are also decreasing your stress ten-fold. Less stress will have a huge impact on treating depression. Add to that, the endorphins and happy chemicals you are releasing when you laugh, and you are well on your way to beating and overcoming depression! You will notice faster progression with your energy healing when your mood is already improved.
  • Laughter therapy reminds us that our journey in this world is one to be enjoyed and savored. Life is supposed to be an enriching and elevating experience for us all. Don’t take everything so seriously all the time!
  • Laughter therapy protects your heart. Laughter improves your blood flow and blood vessels, which can help prevent a heart attack.
  • Laughter therapy can improve your relationships. Shared laughter and humor is a powerful tool which keeps relationships fresh and exciting. Sharing humor with a loved one, friend, or even coworker adds playfulness, joy and energy to a relationship. It also can help you stay united through the more trying times.
  • Laughter therapy is free. It doesn’t cost you a cent, but will produce beneficial and positive effects on you and everyone around you. Why not laugh out loud?

So the next time you are faced with one of those moments where you aren’t sure if you want to laugh or cry, choose to laugh! Your body and mind will thank you for it. Find a way to use laughter as medicine everyday. At the very least, you can surely find something to smile about daily – Try this simple exercise and let me know how it goes! And don’t forget to LOL!

Beating the April Shower Blues!

Are April showers making you blue? You are not alone. Many people experience a mood change when the weather changes. Grayer skies means less sunlight, and countless studies have demonstrated that a decreased amount of sunlight can incite melancholy and sadness. Your tendency on these darker days may be to stay in bed, watch endless hours of TV, eat comfort foods full of heavy carbs, and feel downright sluggish and sad.

Guess what? You don’t have to feel that way on account of those pesky April showers! You are a positive, sunny, happy person inside and you have all the power to change your attitude and MAKE your day sunny no matter what color the sky is outside!

The change first starts with your attitude and perception. Do you want to wallow in sadness and feel lazy and unmotivated all day? Or do you want to reap the benefits of LOVING your life and enjoying each and every moment? There is absolutely nothing stopping you from being happy on a dark, rainy day.

Let’s start with how you are looking at those April showers themselves. Rain is actually quite beneficial and important, because it provides the fresh water making our rivers flow, filling our lakes and keeping our plants alive and thriving. We cannot imagine our life without water. So perhaps instead of waking up to the sound of rain and thinking, “oh ick, it’s a horrible day outside,” you can change your perception and instead think, “oh how wonderful, my plants are getting nourished, the trees will be happy, and I am so truly thankful for this natural blessing.” You may not be able to change the weather outside, but you can certainly change your feelings about it.

You can also busy yourself with healthy, positive activities that will feed your soul. Why not explore hobbies that will motivate, stimulate and sharpen your inner creativity? Have you always wanted to try painting, drawing, knitting, or scrapbooking? What about dancing, singing, playing an instrument, or even just listening to your favorite music? Or finding a comfy place to settle down and dive into that book you have been wanting to read, but never seem to find the time or space to do so? Anything that feeds your creativity, mind and expression will feed your positive attitude on a gloomy day. Positive activities can go a long way!

A rainy day is a fabulous day to write in your journal and add in some extra meditation time! Sip a nice cup of afternoon tea or take a long, luxurious bath. You can raise your level of self-awareness, reflection, and energy! Let the soothing sound of the rain calm your stress and help bring you to a peaceful frame of mind.

Feeling lonely and don’t want all the solace and peace? Why not use this time to build your relationships? Try reaching out to a close friend or spending more quality time indoors with family members. A phone call with a loved one can do wonders to boost your energy and outlook. Or how about playing board games with your family and friends? You can find hours of fun entertainment that will lift your energy and attitude, and bring you closer to the ones you love — it’s a win-win for everyone!

You can take advantage of the time indoors and be productive. You can tackle that closet reorganization you’ve been putting off or conquer that work research you were procrastinating. If you cross off one item from your usual to-do list (despite the April showers outside), you may feel better about how you spend the rest of your day.

Feeling adventurous? When we were kids, we were far more likely to put on our galoshes and run outside to splash in the puddles. When was the last time you jumped in a puddle and played in the rain?

It may surprise you how awesome and fun it is to let go and enjoy the blessings from the sky! And how free and happy you can be if you let yourself feel that way…You have the power to beat the blues brought on by April showers and make every day an enjoyable day filled with positive activities. And the best part is, you can tap into this power on snowy days, sunny days, work days, school days, any day…Try starting your everyday with this sunny attitude. Smile first thing in the morning. See what a difference that alone can make…

spring-cleaning.jpg

Spring Clean Up

Dust off those cobwebs, it is high time for some spring cleaning! No, I am not talking about your closets (though they probably could use a good cleaning too) – I am referring to all that clutter you have in your mind! Are you living someone else’s dream? Are your own priorities collecting dust, having been pushed to the back of your mind? Is your daily life not reflecting the world in which you wish to live? Are you stressed out? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are overdue for a good spring clean up!

Take advantage of your spring energy to clean your mind and set some new goals and boundaries for yourself following these 5 simple tips:

  1. Start your spring clean up by tossing out the old!
Get rid of those old, tired ways of thinking that are dragging you down. No more negativity, self-doubt, and self criticism. Stop yourself when you feel that familiar Negative Nelly creep up on you. You want to see and feel the new, fresh you and that person is the happy, nurturing, loving you! Let her come out and shine this spring!
  2. Clean your mind from all those emotions that are dragging you down!
How often do you find yourself obsessing over “what could have been” or “what should have been”? These thoughts are holding you back from moving forward and healing. Let yourself experience them, then move on. There is no reason to dwell on the past that cannot be changed. Focus on the present and future! There is so much sunshine to be enjoyed!
  3. Reconnect with the positive people in your life!
Healthy relationships are important and are one of the best ways to boost your mental health! It is a wonderful gift to yourself to stay in touch with friends and family who brighten your days and are a positive influence on you. You may not be able to help it if your boss is a Negative Nelly and causes you constant stress, but you can control who you spend your free non-working time with, so make a choice to clean your mind and surround yourself with positive energy!
  4. Reduce your Daily Stress!
One of the best ways to jump-start your mental spring clean up is by making a conscious effort to decrease your stress and anxiety. What better way to do so than through daily meditation? Just 10-20 minutes twice daily will do wonders to create more harmony and balance in your daily life. You will find you will approach problems from a completely different angle and will be a much calmer, happier you.
  5. Try Something New and Fresh!
It is good for you to step outside your comfort zone every so often and try something new and fresh. Whether it’s making plans to take a trip to someplace you have never been (but always dreamed about going), taking a cooking class, learning a new language, planning a picnic with your family, or trying out a new local restaurant, making plans and activities that are new and exciting to you will make your life feel fresher and more stimulating!

Embrace these five simple suggestions to heart, and you will not only reinvigorate, but also clean your mind! You know how great you feel once you have cleaned out your closets and your drawers and reorganized your house?… Well, that wonderful, clean feeling can be echoed when you do a good spring clean up of your mind!
