Initiation: Spiritual Evolution at a Whole New Level

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo. And with a wave of her magic wand, the fairy godmother transforms Cinderella, the lowly servant of her stepmother and stepsisters, into the belle of the ball and the beloved of Prince Charming. But there are rules: if you don’t get home from the ball by midnight, your gorgeous gown turns back into dirty rags and your handsome coach turns back into a pumpkin. But somehow you have managed to hold onto the glass slipper—a reminder that the “real” you is actually a sparkling star.

I’m not really promoting a Disney princess as an ideal you should be trying to emulate, but it’s interesting how fairy tales so often mimic deep spiritual truths.

Like Cinderella, you may have fallen on hard times. It was the death of Cinderella’s mother that brought the wicked stepmother into her life. For you, it may have been a nasty divorce, or the death of a loved one, or a difficult disease or accident, or a financial crisis that brought you to your knees. Whatever the cause, you find yourself feeling “less than” who you know yourself to be.

Did Cinderella whine and fret and complain? No, she managed to keep making lemonade out of the lemons in her life. She shared song and laughter with her animal friends. She did the chores she was handed, no matter how unfair. And her underlying goodness, her ability to rise above her circumstances, brought the fairy godmother and the power of transformation to her . . . because Cinderella was ready.

What makes you ready to transform? Doing whatever is in front of you to do, while maintaining your ability to turn obstacles into challenges and not giving in to despair (at least not too often). And if you can sing with the animals, or connect to nature in whatever way you can, that can help keep you balanced. Beyond that, you can develop a meditation practice. Learning to go inside and find the joy and peace that bubbles up from the inner silence can help you get through any pain or difficulty, as well as laying the foundation for initiation.

Initiation is both an experience and a process. It may be that magical moment when a master healer or spiritual teacher looks at you and “sees” initiatory energy waiting to be brought down into you. And if you are open enough, if you are ready, you may feel waves of bliss entering your body, or a powerful vibration shooting up your spine and out your fingertips, or see beautiful colors or hear angelic voices. You will be suffused in love. You’ll light up from within and radiate bliss. Of course, after the ball is over and you’re back to sweeping the hearth and doing the laundry, you will still have that glass slipper in the pocket of your apron. You will remember the experience of initiation and know that somehow your life is going to change—the prince will knock at your door, the check will arrive in the mail, you’ll find a new job that suits you so much better.

Because initiation goes beyond the magical moment. It is the process of reaching higher and higher levels of spiritual energy and abilities. It’s part and parcel of spiritual evolution, like going from kindergarten up through grade school and high school and then into the rarified realms of college and graduate school. Your Ph.D. will be self-realization. You may get left behind a grade if you don’t pass the tests that naturally arise—like pride in your initiations, or greed for more initiations, or jealousy of others who are having these experiences—but the process will eventually lead you to greater awareness and your ultimate transformation into an enlightened master.

Does this sound like a fairy tale? It’s not. But it is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Do you dream of being able to make the right decisions in your life by listening to your intuition? Do you have fantasies of being a powerful speaker or blogger, standing up for the rights of others? Do you wish you could do something meaningful with your life, like helping to heal others? What is your life purpose? Your destiny?

Become that person you’re meant to be by initiating more fully. The best place to do that is on my online course, Be a Modern Master; check it out here. And may your spiritual guides, like a trusty fairy godmother, turn that pumpkin into the handsome coach that will carry you forth into the realms of higher awareness.
